SEABROOK

The pristine Seabrook shoreline of this southern gateway to NH has beautiful beaches, and dunes covered with beach grass.

Seabrook was first settled in 1638 when it was part of Hampton.  It was incorporated as a separate town in 1768, and named Seabrook after the many brooks meandering to the Atlantic Ocean through its extensive salt marshes.  The boundary between Hampton and Seabrook was subject to periodic dispute for nearly two centuries, and was finally settled by court decision in 1953. The town of Seabrook historically was a small rural community with a beautiful harbor, beach, and dunes. The salt marsh was hayed and used by local farmers, and the fishing business was based in the harbor. Many of the current residents can trace their ancestry to the first Quaker settlers who moved here and established a community with a small-town atmosphere, which holds true to this very day. Today, Seabrook's backdrop is the Nuclear Power Plant, but the landscape is a series of tide pools and marshlands, thanks to the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

Business, industry and tourism thrive in this friendly community. Seabrook Station offers a Science and Nature Center. The Seabrook Community Center offers programs for pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The town is governed by 3 selectmen and a town manager. Seabrook Beach is its own precinct, called the “Seabrook Beach Village District Precinct”, and is governed by zoning regulations separate from the town.

Seabrook Beach is what is called a “barrier beach”. It is part of a system of barrier beaches bordering the Atlantic Ocean from Seabrook, NH to Ipswich MA. The beach is exposed directly to powerful waves on the seaward side, and acts as a buffer between the Atlantic Ocean and the salt marsh to the west. Similar to most barrier beaches, Seabrook Beach consists of beach and dunes that are constantly moving and changing as the beach adjusts in response to wind and waves.  Mainly a residential beach, many cottages are available to rent for the perfect vacation!
