HAMPTON FALLS

A drive along the winding roads of Hampton Falls reveals images of rolling hills, apple and berry orchards, horse farms and Colonial homes.

First established as Hampton's Third Parish, this town received its grant as an independent town in 1726. Located on the Taylor River, Hampton Falls provided water power for Weare's mills. Meschech Weare, a descendant of the mill owners, was New Hampshire's first president, later called governor, in 1776. Hampton Falls was the birthplace of Ralph Adams Cram, a well-known architect, who designed the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York and chapels at West Point and Exeter Academy. A historic marker in town notes the spot where George Washington stopped to shake hands with several soldiers of the Revolution on October 31, 1789 on his way to Portsmouth.

The white steeple of the 1836 First Baptist Church at the intersection of Route 1 and 88 greets visitors entering the small village. A country store and post office are across from the Town Common, with its new bandstand. Within walking distance is the newly renovated school and athletic fields.
