HAMPTON

A seaside resort community with over 365 years of history and a future that is poised for growth into the 21st Century.

First called Winnacunnet, the Indian name for "pleasant pines," Hampton was one of four original New Hampshire towns established by the Massachusetts government. In 1638, the area, which included land now in Seabrook, Kensington, Danville, Kingston, East Kingston, Sandown, North Hampton, South Hampton and Hampton Falls, was settled by a group of parishioners led by Reverend Stephen Bachiler. He had previously preached in Hampton, England, and the town was incorporated as Hampton in 1639. Construction of a railroad in the 1850s made Hampton's oceanfront a popular resort.

While frequently considered a small town, Hampton’s 15,000 population makes it the state’s 16th largest community. Hampton is governed by a five member Board of Selectmen and managed by a Town Manager. The town provides a wide range of municipal services,  and many youth and adult programs. Hampton Beach is part of the Town of Hampton, and there is a separate three member Precinct Commission that serves as a governing body of the Hampton Beach Village Precinct. With almost 1/3 of the state’s ocean frontage, the sandy beaches make Hampton a summer playground and host to thousands of guests and numerous activities.

Colonial charm and dramatic waterfront views make Hampton a wonderful place to visit in the summer and fall. Hampton Beach is home to a lively ocean-front strip of restaurants, shops and amusement parlors, plus a state park that offers camping along the beach. Deep sea fishing and whale watching charters are popular with tourists.

In short, Hampton has something for all ages, all tastes, and all interests.
